Did you consider that the vocs were caused by the open uncured resin? Uncredited resin gives off fumes much more than cured resin and possibly even curing resin. Given the spike for your washing was the same it seems like a likely culprit. It could be that ignoring the fan printing resin gives off next to no fumes. But the open container itself does.

I once worked IT for a company that made rubber-based car parts (like NVH components)... whenever I'd grab a desktop to work on from the floor, I'd have to take it back to a special room with a fume hood and an air compressor to clean off all the carbon black. These were never banned in New Zealand. In fact some products or movies used to have "Banned in Australia!" stickers to make them more attractive.

When we were kids we built these by slicing a tennis ball at the right spot. Worked like a charm. 👌

Absolutely wild that people will unearth these things I think about all the damn time and wonder what happened to them, pound the pavement (metaphorically speaking) to find the originators and interview the people responsible to either confirm or deny myths, and then actually see if they can make a modern-day version of it. We had these too in the United States, and I loved them as a kid. Magnificent toy.
