Recreating a Banned Toy from the 1980s
The Australian made Popball was my favourite toy when I was a young kid. A simple rubber 'half-ball' style toy that uses its own stored kinetic energy to launch itself into the air. These simple toys have been around for a long time and you can still buy them today. But the Popball that I remember was far more powerful than the newer ones! And that led to it being banned across schools - and I was never really sure why.
Now, 35 years later, I wanted to get to the bottom of the urban myths and recreate the toy using materials and processes like 3D printing, mould making and even using unusual materials like carbon black. It was certainly a challenge, but I managed to achieve my goals and le...

World's Fastest Roomba Gets Upgrades
Просмотров 747 тыс.Год назад
A little while ago I modified an iRobot Roomba 630 into a high speed radio controlled vehicle. It was fun and fast, but there were quite a few design flaws that made it difficult to drive. In this video, I'm fixing up some of those issues by 3D printing stronger parts, adding aero and fitting some different electronics. Then I hit the track to see how it performs. *► Join the electrosync team o...

Building the World's Fastest Roomba
Просмотров 1,8 млнГод назад
I built the world’s fastest Roomba! After finding that the few fast Roombas online weren't exactly the real deal, I decided to build my own. @Make Cool Stuff did build the real deal and that was the benchmark that I set out to beat. I used a 10 year old iRobot Roomba 630 and added some high tech motors, electronics and radio control gear to bring it all to life. I CAD designed and 3D printed pa...
How Bad is Resin 3D Printing for Air Quality?

3D Printed CO2 Pool Torpedoes

We all know that you can build CO2 rockets and CO2 dragsters, but what about using CO2 under water? When I was growing up, torpedoes were a big feature in movies, TV and video games and something about them fascinated me. Just proves there's a lot of science behind the simplest fun toy. These days at school Pokemon cards are banned due to gambling and children being tricked out of rare very valuable cards. LEGO Ninjago were banned because it was causing fights (early version of this toy became rare)

Did you consider that the vocs were caused by the open uncured resin? Uncredited resin gives off fumes much more than cured resin and possibly even curing resin. Given the spike for your washing was the same it seems like a likely culprit. It could be that ignoring the fan printing resin gives off next to no fumes. But the open container itself does.

I once worked IT for a company that made rubber-based car parts (like NVH components)... whenever I'd grab a desktop to work on from the floor, I'd have to take it back to a special room with a fume hood and an air compressor to clean off all the carbon black. That stuff is nasty and gets into everything.

In Australia anything that's fun, has a firing pin and looks like it could shoot someone would be banned in a instant. This reminded me of how the Japanese designed Torpedoes that could operate in very shallow water to sink ships in Harbours. I think they were called Type 91's

Absolutely wild that people will unearth these things I think about all the damn time and wonder what happened to them, pound the pavement (metaphorically speaking) to find the originators and interview the people responsible to either confirm or deny myths, and then actually see if they can make a modern-day version of it. We had these too in the United States, and I loved them as a kid. Magnificent toy.
